Rebooting router/modem

Hi,

I am using a wireless modem with router as my point of ethernet connection in a remote monitoring application (no land-line) using the IO-204.  I am not on-site to supervise the system and it must run automatically without long term dropouts.  The problem is that every now and then the modem hangs and I loose connection and it does not auto-reconnect.  I am not sure why but I know this can happen periodically even with land-line connected modem/routers.  The simplest solution is to switch power to the modem/router off wait a minute then power on again.  Wireless connection is re-established OK every time I have done this. My question is, what is the easiest way to have the system reboot itself without manual intervention?  I have a microcontroller connected to one channel through a serial smart board and I can easily switch the power to the modem/router on and off using a pin on the micro connected to a MOSFET. One possible solution I have thought of is to use a serial web service API to request every 10 minutes the  GMT time.  If the reply is not received within a couple of minutes then the mico will power the system off then on again.  Is this the best way to do it or is there a simpler solution?

We are releasing some features that will be able to help. The IO-204 will get a new firmware that allows for on board logic. This means the IO-204 will be able know when it's offline or online and have rules and actions based off that status. Once this gets released (less than a month away) you will have no trouble restarting a modem by the IO-204 deciding when to turn on and off a relay. Please stay tuned!

If you already have a microcontroller and MOSFET involved, you may be able to utilize the digital output failsafe settings.  You could set up one of the output pins to go high when the IO-204 gets knocked offline and trigger a modem/router power reset.

Thanks Jason.  I should have thought of that.  I am still getting up to speed with all the features.  I can use the micro to poll one of the failsafe digital outputs and reboot whenever it goes high.

You need to put in some sort of delay so that once you reboot you give it a minute or so to come back up, otherwise it will go into an endless loop.

This sounds great. Does this mean that actions like opening and closing relays based on analog inputs could be carried out by the io204 regardless of a network connection?

Has this firmware upgrade occurred, and is it available for download?

Yes, it's called C4. If you click on your settings settings tab, it will tell you the current firmware and if there is an upgrade available.

Simplest solution I've found is a cheap lamp timer. Set it to turn the power off for a few minutes and back on every night when it's not being used. I do this for some cheap web cams I have set up at our house in the mountains. They sometimes crash if the power gets glitchy, but within 24 hours, they'll be reset.
