Thanks! i really only need the one way communications for now, i think im going to add some xbees to my xmas list. is there any particular version you recommend?

XBEE Pros are going to be your all around best bet.  Where do you plan on operating them?  Transmitting through anything less than line of sight degrades the signal, much like your wifi.  But the XBEE Pros can reach most of your home no problem.

my house, most likely. they might also spend some time in a robotics lab (lathe / powered tools with some office space.)

It is tough to tell from the pictures but are the boards narrow enough to have one in each port?

It's close but the xbees are just a little bit to wide.

Wow, you are good. That took all of 13min 2 seconds to get an answer! Have you made any other varieties of boards since or any updates on how well your dev boards turned out? Plus your sig link did not appear to work (404 error). The error appears to be because you have "Stencils" on the website and "stencils" in the link (I assume the website is on a linux server to care whether it is uppercase or lower case). Just so you know...

@fillibar - not much new to report on dev boards.  I have been working on modules for the led sign that I used these xbee's.  Thanks for hte feedback on the link.  Fixed that.
